چکیده

Palladized biomass of Desulfovibrio vulgaris (Bio-Pd(0)) reduced Cr(VI) to Cr(III) at an initial rate four-fold higher than chemically-prepared Pd(0) metal. Optimal Cr(VI) reduction by suspended BioPd(0) occurred at pH 3, whereas pH did not affect the rate of Cr(VI) reduction by Bio-Pd(0) immobilized in agar beads. The rate of Cr(VI) reduction was concentration-dependent below 300 μmol dm−3, and application of enzyme kinetics, considering Bio-Pd(0) as an ‘artificial enzyme’, gave an apparent Km (Km app) of approx. 650 μmol dm−3 and Vmax of 1667 nmol h−1 mg Pd(0) for suspended Bio-Pd(0). The potential of Bio-Pd(0) as a method for the treatment of Cr(VI)-wastes is discussed.  2005 Society of Chemical Industry

Reduction of Chromate by Desulfovibrio vulgaris and Its c(3) Cytochrome.

Washed cell suspensions of Desulfovibrio vulgaris rapidly reduced Cr(VI) to Cr(III) with H(2) as the electron donor. The c(3) cytochrome from this organism functioned as a Cr(VI) reductase. D. vulgaris may have advantages over previously described Cr(VI) reducers for the bioremediation of Cr(VI)-contaminated waters.

Biological versus mineralogical chromium reduction: potential for reoxidation by manganese oxide.

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(vi), present predominantly as CrO4(2-) in water at neutral pH) is a common ground water pollutant, and reductive immobilization is a frequent remediation alternative. The Cr(iii) that forms upon microbial or abiotic reduction often co-precipitates with naturally present or added iron (Fe), and the stability of the resulting Fe-Cr precipitate is a function of its mineral ...

Modeling the Kinetics of Removal for Uranium(vi) and Sulfate from Aqueous Solutions in the Presence of Sulfate-reducing Bacteria

The objective of these studies is to describe and characterize the reactions involved in the reduction and precipitation of heavy metal ions by both a mixed culture of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), as well as a pure culture of Desulfovibrio desulfuricans (ATCC 7757). The enzymatic reduction of soluble hexavalent U(VI) to insoluble tetravalent U(IV) by Desulfovibrio desulfuricans has been rep...

Periplasmic cytochrome c3 of Desulfovibrio vulgaris is directly involved in H2-mediated metal but not sulfate reduction.

Kinetic parameters and the role of cytochrome c(3) in sulfate, Fe(III), and U(VI) reduction were investigated in Desulfovibrio vulgaris Hildenborough. While sulfate reduction followed Michaelis-Menten kinetics (K(m) = 220 micro M), loss of Fe(III) and U(VI) was first-order at all concentrations tested. Initial reduction rates of all electron acceptors were similar for cells grown with H(2) and ...

Microbial Reduction of Chromate in the Presence of Nitrate by Three Nitrate Respiring Organisms

A major challenge for the bioremediation of toxic metals is the co-occurrence of nitrate, as it can inhibit metal transformation. Geobacter metallireducens, Desulfovibrio desulfuricans, and Sulfurospirillum barnesii are three soil bacteria that can reduce chromate [Cr(VI)] and nitrate, and may be beneficial for developing bioremediation strategies. All three organisms respire through dissimilat...
